The strong winds blowing through Dubai in the last few days didn’t help British DJ Fatboy Slim, aka Norman Cook, get his big beats across the air during his first-ever Middle East concert on Wednesday (February 11) at Barasti Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort.

Although the world-class dance DJ played many of his big hits, mixing his old songs with his newer tunes behind a table set up on stage in front of 3,800 fans, many people were quite angry when the concert ended.

Indeed, Fatboy Slim arrived on stage at 9.30pm and ended his set at 11.10pm.

No further musical acts were planned and people started to leave. The concert, sponsored by Live Nation, opened with several well-received opening acts, including DJ Christian, Greg On Bongos and Cathy Battistessa “The Voice of Café Del Mar,” Charl Chaka and Da:Funct.

Many concert goers expressed their frustration. “I didn’t enjoy it because it ended too early. Three hundred and fifty dirhams for an hour-and-a-half set, they should advertise that. It’s rubbish,” said Mjobni from the US.

“If you want to bring international DJs here, charge more money and let them play until 3 or 4 in the morning. Would I want my money back? Yes.”

Fatboy Slim opened his set – a banana in his mouth before throwing it to the audience – with his 1998 single The Rockafeller Skank followed by Right Here Right Now (You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby, 1998), Going Out of My Head (Better Living Through Chemistry, 1996) and Weapon of Choice (Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, 2000).

Gareth O’Brian, 27, from Ireland, likes Fatboy Slim now as much as before and enjoyed the fact that the DJ played a wide range of songs from the late 1990s up to now.

“It’s good because he’s mixing his old stuff with his new songs,” said O’Brian who is a big fan of the songs The Rockafeller Skank and Right Here Right Now.

The screen set up behind the star DJ showed colourful videos such as the evolution of man with funky images of a fish becoming a monkey becoming a man, who is then overweight.

Flashy colours and neon lights, along with powerful psychedelic laser lights floated through the air.

Mixing electronic, big beat, hip-hop and dance music, Fatboy Slim also played In Heaven and one of the audience favourites, Praise You.

“I love Fatboy Slim. He’s amazing. He’s kind of funky and has good beats,” said Scottish expat Lorna Leback, 27, who travelled from Abu Dhabi to see the DJ.

“Here you’ve got the sun, the heat and the nice people. It’s hot here so you don’t have to worry about mud and rain,” she said.

Some fans were disappointed with the DJ’s performance and blamed the wind. “He’s always fun. But the wind was blowing over the records and it started skipping,” said Aussie expat Michael Fraser, 29.

“Fatboy Slim used to be huge. He’s gone down. Maybe it’s because of this outdoor venue and the sounds were lost in the atmosphere,” said Sophie Martin, from England. “In his days, he was amazing. This was okay.”

Others complained about the sound system. “The music was good but there was something wrong with the speakers and the volume,” said Aymen Datsa from Ghana. “In a couple of the sets he played, he messed up for a long time and had to stop. But it was probably the best house music concert I’ve been to in Dubai.”

In 1999, Fatboy Slim won three MTV awards for the Praise You video, for best direction, best choreography and best breakthrough video. In September 2001, his video for Weapon of Choice received six prizes at the MTV Video Awards, the most given to a single winner that year.

Fatboy Slim brought last night's O2 Wireless to a rocking close playing remixes of The Rolling Stones, Arcade Fire and Cream.

Performing to one of the biggest audiences of the weekend so far, the Brighton turntablist, real name Norman Cook, produced a massive crowd-pleasing set that further cemented his name as the world's greatest party DJ.

Opening with a remix of his own 'Praise You', Cook then thumped out reworkings of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller', House Of Pain's 'Jump Around' and an edited accapella of Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip's 'Thou Shall Always Kill that changed the lyrics to "Fatboy Slim…Just a band."

Backed up large screens that flashed the words to tracks like 'Star 69' and images of arrows, boxes and clocks the DJ spent a lot of time dancing in front of the decks and sitting on the edge of the stage clapping along.

A mash-up of The Rolling Stones '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' with The Rockerfeller Skank got the biggest cheer of the night, though Arcade Fire's 'No Cars Go', Cream's 'Sunshine Of My Love' and The Chemical Brothers' 'Block Rocking Beats' also proved popular.

Fatboy Slim also had time to air a track from his latest project, the Brighton Port Authority which featured Iggy Pop on vocals, so fittingly the Stooges' frontman appeared on the LED screens to sing along.

Finishing with a thumping edit of Beyonce's 'Crazy In Love' mixed with 'Praise You', the DJ left the stage to rapturous applause.

Earlier on fans were prevented from entering the Sandisk Tent to watch Underworld as the tent was too busy. The Essex band went on to perform hits like 'Rez' and 'Born Slippy', while Audio Bullys packed out the third tent performing 'Shot You Down'. 'We Don't Care' and new single 'Gimmie That Punk'.

Bootsy Collins' James Brown tribute on the main stage that was the surprising hit of the afternoon as the bassist performed '(Get Up I feel Like A) Sex Machine', 'Soul Power' and Aretha Franklin's 'Respect'.

With the band all dressed in red and Collins himself wearing a large pimp hat, the funk legend brought out a James Brown look-a-like to sing the tracks as scantily clad dancers grooved either side of him.

Elsewhere Deadmau5 DJed on the main stage wearing a giant mouse mask, Mstrkrft filled the Sandisk Tent with dark house tracks and Does It Offend You, Yeah? performed a riotous live set.

O2 Wireless continues today with Counting Crows, Ben Harper and Powderfinger all performing.

WHATEVER else you can say about Fatboy Slim, the punters love him ‘ and he loves them right back.

Right here, right now ‘ Inverness Ironworks, Thursday night ‘ he’s powered up like a grinning sun by the welcoming cheer that greets his arrival and the arms that bounce up to salute the veteran DJ and producer.

The venue was packed out for the one-off night organised last-minute to get the most out of his recce trip to the Rock Ness site.

Earlier in the day at the interviews organised at the Dores Inn, he seemed a bag of nerves.

A trembling hand grasped his Coke glass, though he grinned and did his best to seem relaxed.

Already there was a story that he’d been having a fly cigarette out front before his press grilling ‘ the only time he smoked, he’d confessed to a local.

Some bright spark suggested getting the cigarette butt to sell on eBay’  sadly, he’d tidily taken it with him!

But there’s never a sign of nerves when he’s performing.

The fortysomething DJ comes to life behind the record decks, where he still uses records in the old-fashioned way ‘ though there’s the inevitable laptop too ‘ and a couple of guys assisting the smooth running of the set.

Local DJ Wallace had opened the night, while Glasgow’s Boom Monk Ben followed and had set up a rising tide of emotion and excitement.

Known for a mix that’s every bit as eclectic as Fatboy’s ‘ drum n bass, soul, funk, reggae, 80s pop ‘“ he had answered his night-before-call-up by offering a tantalising taste of what he can do.

Classic Northern soul made-pop number Tainted Love ‘ with just possibly original Sixties singer Gloria Jones – gave way to The Fugees’ Ready Or Not and into classic 80s indie pop, courtesy of The Cure.

But though the sound was mesmerising, the stage presence didn’t have the sheer, onstage charisma you always get from Fatboy Slim. There’s a catalogue of useful hand signals that Fatboy uses to pump up the mood ‘“ salute, clapping us, arms out and taking the praise, listening hand to ear to hear us holler ‘ it all keeps every eye in the house on him.

Earlier in the day, he’d stated that there would be nothing from the upcoming new album in his Ironworks set ‘“ all saved to preview at Rock Ness proper.

But it wasn’t strictly true. And we did get a sneaky preview of the new album after all.

For alongside the big favourites we should have expected ‘ including his remix of The Automatic’s Monster, such a crowd trigger when he unveiled it in his Rock Ness headlining set two years ago ‘ there was at least one wee treat from his newest work.

Already featured on the soundtrack album from TV series Heroes out last month, the Fatboy version of The Monochrome Set’s track Hey Frank (Slight Return) snuck into the set.

The unmistakeable gravelly tones of the track’s featured artist Iggy Pop quickly gave the game away. Fatboy has said elsewhere the Iggy track won’t be the first single from the album which looks set to be released under Fatboy’s Brighton Port Authority guise.

And with other musical guests on the album set to include Talking Heads’ David Byrne and Martha Wainwright, it looks as if the mash-ups of music genres, voices and beats you find in his live set will be matched by the new album.

All too soon, it’s over. The Velvet Underground’s I’m Waiting For The Man gives way to some technical hitch. Fatboy reaches for a record to save the day ‘“ and it’s Sparks’ Number One All Over Heaven. Manic, thrillingly camp, it minces off as a longtime Fatboy favourite warms up to end the show. Bob Marley’s Could You Be Loved twists the dial to mellow.

Fatboy salutes us, takes the praise and grins like a man who believes his own track’s mantra ‘ "Fatboy Slim is f***ing in heaven".
